Kurdish fighters kill Turkish soldier in Iraq: ministry

ANKARA: A Turkish soldier was killed by Kurdish separatists in northern Iraq during a Turkish military operation that’s due to be wound down, Ankara’s defense ministry said Wednesday. The soldier was shot by fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been involved in an on-and-off armed insurgency against Turkiye since 1984, the ministry said. Regarded as a terror organization by Turkiye and most of its Western allies, including the United States and European Union, the PKK has bases in northern Iraq from where it launches attacks into Turkiye.
