Democrats more likely to be critical of Israel: Survey

Democrats are more likely to be critical of Israel, according to a survey released Wednesday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

When it comes to the length of the Israel-Hamas war, more than half of Democrats in the survey said Israel’s government is heavily responsible, the AP reported. Only around 40 percent of Republicans said the same.

On the topic of allyship with Israel, about half of Republicans consider the country an ally, as well as a place that holds the same values and interests, according to the AP. About half of Democrats don’t consider Israel a place that holds the same values and interests, and rather a partner country that the U.S. should collaborate alongside.

Overall, 31 percent of Americans in the survey said they feel for the Israelis and Palestinians, while 25 percent said they felt “more” for the Israelis and 15 percent said they felt more for the Palestinians.

Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday. The attack came close to a year after Hamas’s initial attack of Israel on Oct. 7, and just after Israel began raids into southern Lebanon aimed at the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran.

The AP-NORC survey took place Sept. 12-16, featuring 1,111 people and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.95 percentage points.

The Associated Press contributed.
